A three-bedroom house designed by an award winning architect with two bathrooms, a large open plan living area and a courtyard - all this for only $106,390. More affordable housing in South Australia is now one step closer after the launch of the Affordable Architect Series yesterday. Architect Max Pritchard, winner of several awards and one of the leaders in his field, teamed up with the Hickinbotham Group to produce a series of houses that incorporate the latest advances in sustainable living at low prices. The series comprised of 46 designs, is priced from $67,800 to $141,000. The houses - that do not include the land - are available to HomeStart customers who meet a means and assets test. The first display home at the Housing SA Hawksbury Park development in Salisbury North was officially opened by Housing Minister Jay Weatherill yesterday. "It's fantastic, it's about bringing on new affordable housing supply and matching it up with low to moderate income earners," he said. "We have a range of products that can really start to bring low to moderate income earners back in to the game. At the moment, they are getting out-priced and out-bid by investors and this creates supply that we have set aside for them." Hickinbotham Homes managing director Michael Hickinbotham said the nationwide housing shortage had prompted the company to come up with creative affordable solutions. "We have come up with what is now the most affordable home in South Australia," he said. "We have worked with top architects to deliver a result that is not only affordable but also sustainable. These are the most affordable houses in South Australia but they are also really very well built." Mr Pritchard said the designs led the market in the way they responded to climate and lifestyle. "This series allows homeowners to choose a design which suits their lifestyle and is designed around a north orientation to capture the winter sun and reduce energy costs," he said.
